Jocelyn Carter

Jocelyn Carter was born in the UK where she trained as Orthopaedic nurse.  She furthered her training and became a physiotherapist before moving to Canada in 1978.  In 1986 she came to British Colombia where worked for the Island Health Authority until her retirement in 2007.

In 2016 she joined the Eagle Heights Africa in BC Society where she holds the position of Vice President.  Jocelyn plays a major role in the Eagle Heights fundraisers as well as working on the communication flow between students and their sponsors.

John Pendray

John Pendray started out on a small dairy farm in Saanich BC, moving his family in 1955 to the another Saanich location, and increasing his dairy farm to 170 milking cows. More than two decades later, another move to the Saanich Peninsula saw his dairy farm grow to 280 head. As well as managing his own farms, John was elected President of Island Farm Dairy in Victoria, holding that position for 29 years. John is a respected man known for his honesty and forthright nature, making him a valued and wise Director of Eagle Heights Africa in BC.

Christine Blackburn

Christine Blackburn After immigrating to Canada, Christine worked for many years coordinating a distance education network in Kenora, Ontario. She also worked for many years in geoscience laboratories, mostly at the University of Toronto. An advocate of life-long learning, Christine earned a BA and HBSW from Lakehead University, and an MA in Integrated Studies from Athabasca University, Alberta. She culminated her working life as an administrative assistant with the Department of National Defence in Victoria.

Brian Dowse

Brian Dowse was born in Ireland where he obtained a degree in Civil Engineering in 1960 and this led to obtaining a scholarship to study for a Master’s degree at the University of Illinois. In early 1962 he emigrated to Canada where he has worked as an engineering consultant on projects in Quebec, Ontario, Saskatchewan and Alberta. Now in retirement Brian lives in Sidney, B.C. As an engineer he has worked in over 30 countries. In 1964 he was introduced to Africa when he was assigned for 2 years to a highway development project in the Rift Valley region of Ethiopia and in future years he worked on projects in Egypt, Kenya, Tanzania, Mozambique and South Africa as well as 20 other countries.

Elizabeth Dow

Elizabeth Dow lives in Sidney BC, Canada and has a daughter and a teenaged grandson. She is a Registered Social Worker (BSW, MSW, PhD, RSW) and worked in clinical practice; social planning, and community development for several years. She worked in five universities: King’s College at the University of Western Ontario, as lecturer and Field Education Director; Wilfrid Laurier University while completing her doctoral studies; University of Victoria in the School of Social Work, as well as in the Multidisciplinary Graduate Program on Policy and Practice. She was also a research affiliate with their Centre on Aging. Elizabeth served as the Director of Social Work at Memorial University and the University of the Fraser Valley. She has travelled to several countries associated with research and international community development promoting educational opportunities. She has served on several not-for-profit organizations.

Sally Hughes

Sally Hughes, Member at Large. Sally is a Social Worker (BA, BSW, MSW, PhD in Social Dimensions of Health) with a 30 year career as a medical social worker. She has taught at a variety of universities and colleges in Canada, and also completed post-doctoral research contracts with Centres on Aging in Ontario. Since retirement, Sally has worked extensively with several non-profit organizations and Global Affairs Canada, travelling to and living in Ethiopia, Nepal, Malawi and Laos, fulfilling roles in Hospital Administration, University Course design and teaching, Gender Advisor to national governments, etc.

Sponsor a Student

Sponsorship Update 2021: Eagle Heights Africa in BC has an immediate need to support a child in Kenya. If you wish to sponsor this child, contact us at jocelynmcarter@yahoo.ca. The cost to sponsor this child for 2021 is $1200. This payment covers tuition in a boarding school, room and board, a uniform, and an allowance for personal effects. Thanks for considering this urgent matter.

EHA BC works with EHA (Kenya) in selecting new students who would benefit from sponsorship and the opportunity to attend school.  Once a Canadian sponsor is identified, EHA (Kenya) selects a child from its waiting list.

Some facts about full sponsorship:

• The sponsorship period coincides with the Kenyan school year – January 1st to Dec 31st
• Sponsors receive a letter from the student twice each year
• School reports are forwarded to each sponsor at the end of each trimester
• Sponsorship fees cover all or part of school tuition, room and board at a residential school, school uniforms, and an allowance for personal effects
• The annual sponsorship fee for a student in 2021 is $1200.00
• EHA BC issues tax receipts to each Canadian sponsor
• Each December, the EHA BC Directors determine the investment required for sponsorship of each student and adjusts the annual fee accordingly.
• EHA in BC invites inquiries from any and all countries.
